Improve communication and social skills through Lego

A little about me

I was a police officer for 17 years and for the last 8 years I have worked as a level 3 teaching assistant in various primary schools, working with children with additional needs. This has been 1:1 and also general TA across all primary years - supporting children with autism, ADHD, dyslexia, selective mutism and children with challenging behaviour.

I have a BA hons in business studies, qualified level 3 teaching assistant, “Team Teach” trained, first aid trained, up-to date with safeguarding procedures and on the enhanced DBS service.

I loved Lego from a very early age and have spent an untold number of hours building all sorts of amazing Lego creations. I still have some of the pieces I made from when I was a child.

During my time at University one of the key skills on the course was how to improve the development of social interactions.

I believe the opportunity to combine Lego with improving the communication and well being of children as a vital component in giving them the chance to succeed.

My journey with Lego

I discovered my passion for Lego at a very early age. For most of my birthdays and at Christmas I would ask for Lego sets to complete.  When I realised the use of Lego could be used as a tool to help young children to develop their communication skills I knew this was a great opportunity to use my skills to facilitate their learning in an alternative way. I have found that using Lego based techniques helps children to share thoughts and feelings more easily and is a great way to help in their social development.
